Approaching Survivalism With Common Sense

January 8, 2012

The rise in interest of survivalism in recent year is quite fascinating. As a “normal” working American that is simply concerned about the direction of our country, I find it hard to get information tailored to someone in my situation. For instance, most survivalism information is only for individuals who are looking to abandon everything about their way of life. As a parent with two young kids, a job and a surburban home, this isn’t realistic for me. Moreover, I’m not quite ready to embrace the “mad max” scenario that many seem to foresee.

The situation I see coming is still serious but not quite a complete breakdown in society. I see the masses getting much poorer. As a result of a tough economy, a debased currency and a general decline in the standard of living in America, the masses will not fare well in the coming decade. This of course comes with other consequences perhaps like increased crime and increased unrest/protests.

My aim is to increase my skills and survivalism knowledge by simply tackling one thing at a time. Perhaps you’ve never gardened before. Why don’t you start learning how? Start small. Make mistakes and learn how to grow various types of vegetables and fruits. This is an excellent skill that will serve you in good times and bad.

This is my philosophy. Find new ways to explore new skills and increase my self reliance while not completely abandoning my entire way of life. You may disagree with this, but I would bet there are millions of people in a similar situation.
